Every year I look forward to the Met Gala Ball. Celebrities and stars from all over the world descend on New York, each trying to out do the other for the most striking and rememberable outfit. This years theme was China Through The Looking Glass and so Orientalism was to be seen all over the red carpet. The main colours to be seen and that were in keeping with the theme were of course the expected crimson reds, golds, white, black and forest greens. There was dramatic trains, intricate beading and show-stopping headpieces. Hair and make up was kept to quite a minimum with most opting for sleek ponytails or waves and natural make up with a bold lip. There was so many looks I loved but here are my top picks…
Anne Hathaway in Ralph Lauren
Poppy Delevingne in Marchesa
Lily Aldridge in Carolina Herrera
Amal Clooney in Maison Margiela
Amanda Seyfried in Givenchy
Kate Hudson in Michael Kors
Jessica Chastain in Givenchy
Kendall Jenner in Calvin Klein
Alison Williams in Giambattista
Although they weren’t high up on my love list, I can’t fail to mention J-Lo, Bey and Kim’s derrière hugging, sheer, embellished numbers. If anyone was gonna pull it off it was going to be these ladies!
Last but not least, is two ladies who are not shy from making a fashion statement, and last night was no different. Rihanna and Sarah Jessica Parker forever pushing the limits, and you have to love them for that.
So who was your favourite? For me it’s a toss between Poppy, Kate and Anne! Leave a comment and let me know. I read quite a topical piece on Refinary29 about what Orientalism in the world of fashion actually represents and I found it really interesting so if any of you have a few minutes I would add it the reading list (here).
